Détail de la mosaïque gallo-romaine exposée à l’Office de Tourisme

The Gallo-Roman mosaic

On display at the Tourist Office · free entry

One of the largest mosaics in northern Gaul, unearthed in 1976 and on permanent display at the Tourist Office.

The Tourist Office displays a restored fragment of a 4th-century polychrome geometric mosaic discovered in Migennes in 1976. It covered the floor of a room of about 210 m², of which only two thirds remained when it was found.

The east and west panels share a pattern of octagons, squares and elongated hexagons; the central panel combines large squares and circles around a Maltese cross. A few figurative motifs, kantharos vases and foliage, break up the geometry.

Dating from the late 4th century, the time of Saint Germanus of Auxerre and the beginning of Clovis’s reign, it probably adorned a palace or a religious building.
